The First Law: A Dismas Hardy Novel

At last recovered from a near-fatal gunshot wound, Lieutenant Abe Glitsky is back at work. But instead of returning to his old job as chief of homicide detail, he’s assigned a desk job in the payroll department, where he has no business investigating murders—until his father’s closest friend is shot dead in a downtown pawn shop. Glitsky asks the new homicide lieutenant about the case, but the brass tells him to stay out of it. Guided by the Patrol Special—a private police force supervised by the SFPD that is a holdover from San Francisco's vigilante past—the police have already targeted their prime suspect: John Holiday, proprietor of a run-down local bar, and a friend and client of Dismas Hardy. Hardy has ample reason to doubt both his client’s guilt and the evidence conveniently stacked against him. Hardy turns to Glitsky for help, but when Holiday is implicated in the grisly killings of two more men, their pleas fall on hostile ears. To avoid arrest, Holiday turns fugitive, and the police believe three things: that Hardy’s a liar protecting Holiday, that Holiday is a cold-blooded killer, and that Glitsky’s a bad cop on the wrong side of the law.And as the deadly pursuit for a murderer intensifies, Hardy, Glitsky, and even their families are directly threatened by the forces that want to see Holiday brought down. Cut off from the system that they both served, denied justice from the corridors of power, and increasingly isolated at every turn, Hardy and Glitsky face their darkest hour. For when the law that is meant to shield and protect those closest to them fails, they must look to another, more primal law in order to survive.…

Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

Soooo many characters introduced in the first 20% of the book with a boring and unlikely setup for a plot led me to realize this is a waste of time. I couldn't finish it.

I was two thirds into this, one of his best, works when I recognized a phrase Vincent said. Then I remembered I had read this one before, but I continued to read it because I couldn't recall the ending. There is a specific sequence of events that is referenced in multiple subsequent novels. While solidifying my appreciation of Lescroart, this specific turn of events brings to bear more enjoyment of the other worksof his art.

The more we get to know Dismas Hardy and the other characters of John Lescroart's San Francisco, the more we appreciate them as well-drawn, three-dimensional characters. The First Law takes our relationship with these characters to a new level, taking us along as they face their gravest threat yet. Not so much a "whodunnit" as a "whatchagonnaDOaboutit," this novel is gripping, tense and shocking. John Lescroart does not disappoint.I consider The First Law required reading for those looking to get into Lescroart's subsequent Hardy/Glitsky novels. What happens here has serious repercussions in the next couple of books and, most profoundly, in The Ophelia Cut (released a few weeks before this review was written).

I have read most of the Ditmas Hardy stories and have enjoyed them This one especially was well written and a good story. I read this awhile ago and downloaded it for my kindle when it was on special. This story has everything and was a good read many years later

I always enjoy reading Lescroart since I once lived in SF and recognize many of the places he mentions. I've even been in the Shamrock out on Lincoln near GG Park. Plus the stories are well written with real characters.

When Sam Silverman is murdered in his jewelry store, a twisting, downhill ride begins for Dismas Hardy and Abe Glitsky and their close circle of friends who become enmeshed in a vortex of violence that touches them all, and leads them into more danger than they had anticipated. Lescroart has a way with murder plots and his strong character development is one of his strengths as an author. This is worth reading and may keep the reader up later than he or she would like, but it's worth it.

Very boring read with to much bad language! John is a much better writer than this. Why all the "F" words?

Different but not in a good way. Not lescroart s best. Of course, there's incompetence and a touch of corruption in most police departments, but this Book stretched the limits. Nothing offered for gersons motive.
