This product was advertised as 12 books for $.99. What a deal! But it wasn't 12 books, it was one massive book. As my writing teacher had taught, a book needs a beginning where the scene is set, a middle where the action is, and an end where everything ties together. All 12 of these books had beginnings and middles but only the last one had an end.The writing was good, it kept me entertained and on the edge of my seat at times but it should have been advertised as one BIG book. (As you can tell, that really bothered me!)It was worth the $.99 but if I had paid the $3.99 for each "book", I would have been highly disappointed and upset. If you want a good, long read, this is for you. It had a new "recipe for disaster" for those of us that like the apocalyptic genre and the characters were well rounded.
I read the first book so far. Mechanically, its decently written and its a nice change from the standard zombie/virus/EMP end of society fare.I do have one massive problem with the series so far, and thats the whole way the "failure of electronics/exploding batteries" thing is described. So, in short - the author seems to have gotten the idea from the exploding cell phone lithium ion battery issue that was such an issue a couple years ago, and extrapolated that out. The issue is, if you know anything about different types of batteries, and also technology and networking and computer viruses and how they work, you'd realize that "a (something) that causes the batteries of "interconnected" tech to explode, cars to leak gas and then the batteries explode causing mass carnage and so on" is absolutely not feasable. I could get into the details, but in short ill say Li (lithium ion) cell phone batteries can rupture, get hot enough to burn, but they cant "explode". No battery really can. And unless youre rupturing an Li batterys cells or it had an actual physical defect (why all those cell batts melted down), you cant cause them to do it without an external power source damaged in some way to allow overcharging. And the lead/acid batteries 90% of cars have, they can only have a meltdown like that through improper wiring, or again, overcharging. Again an external source. This just covers the battery part. Nevermind the feasibility of something like a virus being able to wirelessly damage to the point of battery meltdown every single phone and "new" car in the US. Ill still read the story, but as a techie, it strained my ability to believe. I mean zombies arent real, but theres viruses out there that can make beings act aggressive or crazy, so its one tiny step further to believe a "zombie" virus. EMP, same thing. But this...its too much for an author who claimed they wanted a "realistic" fall of civilization scenario. I would have appreciated the author coming up with a pseudo scientific excuse, because part of the fun of the postapocalypse is wondering if you, the reader, would survive. But in order for that to work, the scenario has to be plausible in the first place. Also, the 2 main chars are preppers. Come *on*.
A bit of a change from the Zombie apocalypse. This series was an excellent read, well characterised, well plotted with a good following story. Several instances did not quite jell with me - why would Dianne empty her magazine into an "enemy" when she had already hit him twice in the chest (when she was after the medication for Jason). This was a lady who was an experienced shooter, why would you leave yourself exposed with an empty weapon in the situation she was in? I just felt that there was a lot of "emptying the magazine" shooting, however this did not detract from the overall story line which held together well. Plus, the Spetsnaz officer "emptying his magazine" into Jane, he would have double tapped - quite dead, the same as Delta Force, SAS and all the other secret squirrel groups training. Not quite sure why Jane was chosen to die; for me it was a letdown. Her character was too important to be written out of the story, badly wounded but survivable would have been a better outcome for her - she deserved to live. All in all though, a very good read, may well follow his other series now.
This is a great suspense SHTF/EMP prepper book, but there are a few things that are somewhat annoying during reading. The author flips back and forth between home and away every chapter for the most part even when you're mid-live-action-event in one place and not in the other. I found myself flipping forward to the next chapter for three or four chapters to finish the action and then trying to reverse and find my way back to where I left off on the other half of the story. Further, the name of the event itself is pretty ridiculous because it's alphabetically too similar to a dabocle, so that's what I mindfully changed it to while reading. Also, for some inexplicable reason there are several new characters revealed about 8 books in with no linking background and no seeming importance to the plot, although admittedly, I didn't care and skipped that part of the storyline most of the time because it didn't seem to click (which confirmed its non-importance). The author otherwise kept me completely engaged in the events and rooting for the characters throughout, and I've completely recommended out to family and friends!
The author has essentially followed the 19th century example of people such as Charles Dickens and Alexander Dumas. Both those stories were written as newspaper articles with a chapter each week. This book follows those lines. As a result, there is a lot of filler by the author in describing the previous chapter and predicting the next. The story itself was good, though the heroine was much more admirable than the hero. She was much better at defending her family than he was defending friends.
Anyone who likes an easy reading apocalyptic book should enjoy Surviving the Fall. I looked forward to each book, they all kept me turning pages well into the night. Good believable characters.
This is a great series by Mike Kraus! Lots of action along the way. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes apocalypse stories. This set is a great bargain at 99 cents!
