13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don't Do: Raising Self-Assured Children and Training Their Brains for a Life of Happiness, Meaning, and Success

The author of the international best seller 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do turns her focus to parents, teaching them how to raise mentally strong and resilient children.

Do today's children lack the flexibility and mental strength they need to cope with life's challenges in an increasingly complicated and scary world? With safe spaces and trigger warnings designed to "protect" kids, many adults worry that children don't have the resilience to reach their greatest potential. Amy Morin, the author who identified the characteristics that mentally strong people share, now gives adults - parents, teachers, and other mentors - the tools they need to become mental strength trainers. While other books tell parents what to do, Amy teaches parents what not to do, which, she says, is equally important in raising mentally strong youngsters.

As a foster parent, psychotherapist, and expert in family and teen therapy, Amy has witnessed firsthand what works. When children have the skills they need to deal with challenges in their everyday lives, they can flourish socially, emotionally, behaviorally, and academically. With appropriate support, encouragement, and guidance from adults, kids grow stronger and become better. Drawing on her experiences and insight, 13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don't Do combines case studies, practical tips, specific strategies, and concrete and proven exercises to help children of all ages - from preschoolers to teenagers - build mental muscle and develop into healthy, strong adults.

Definitely written from a conservative point of view. I bought this book in part because it was written by a social worker, but was immediately turned off by some aspects of the book. A harsh rhetoric, and in some parts lacking empathy (see another review mentioning victim-blaming). In the chapter on shielding children from pain, a number of painful or anxiety-causing situations are listed. You know what causes my child and his friends the most anxiety? The active shooter drills at his school, the mass shootings on the news, and school shootings in our own community. What this author lists? Things like “terrorism.” There have been over 100 mass shootings in Florida (where the author lives, and where gun laws are notoriously weak) in the past 5 years; I’d bet that’s a higher concern on the minds of children than terrorism right now... but, here the source of pain is: FOREIGNERS. Oh, and natural disasters. No mention of gun violence. This is just one of the surprising omissions; I’ll update my review as I finish the book... if I can read the rest despite shaking my head in disagreement too much.

I am dating a woman with 2 young children.Having no experience with them, I sought help.Upon sharing some of what I was learning my girlfriend started to read it too and thinks it will be very helpful. I think this book should be required reading for every parent.

Amy Morin does a fabulous job of giving strategies, exercises, and tools to help parents raise happy and successful children. Her writing style is engaging and I can easily relate to her examples. The knowledge presented is so relevant to our era of parenting. Some of it makes me laugh, because I am absolutely guilty of doing the things that I should not do. The best part about this book is that it gives me awareness of my mistakes and then outlines a clear path to get me back on track.

This is an excellent book! It gives specific suggestions for what is helpful and not helpful when raising self-assured children. This book is full of tips for implementing the ideas presented, when parenting preschoolers, school-age kids, and teenagers. I would recommend this book to any parent or person who interacts with children. Please mark if you find my review helpful. Thank you so much!

All new (& old parents) should read this. Given the challenge provided by the internet, social media and "experts" everywhere, this book is a concise summary with good examples. It provides practical solutions to problems that will be encountered.

I have been devouring parenting books the past couple of months and have gotten a lot out of most of them. I didn't finish this one.

I’ve read the first book, 13 things mentally strong people don’t do. I work in Mental/Behavioral health, we work with a lot of youth and I had my entire staff read this book. They enjoyed it and not only did they say it helped them with the work we do but also with their own children.

I never write reviews, but I felt this book was spot on and a breath of fresh air in today’s world. I am a parent of two girls ages 8 and 9, and a 5th grade teacher. So many issues I see plaguing today’s youth could be circumvented with the strategies outlined in this book. I highly recommend it to parents of all ages.
